The anti-terror operation against the militants in Jammu and Kashmir’s Sopore sub-district entered its second day on Friday, officials said.
They said the encounter erupted Thursday evening when joint forces launched a cordon and a search operation in the Panipora area of Sopore following an input about militant presence.
“During the search operation, an exchange of fire took place,” officials said, adding that additional forces were rushed to the area after the initial contact.
During the whole night, the security forces maintained a tight cordon around the area, and gunshots were exchanged early Friday.
The police on Thursday confirmed the exchange of fire between the security forces and the militants.
“Acting on a specific input regarding the presence of terrorists in the Panipora Sopore area of #Baramulla, a joint anti-terrorist operation was launched by the police and security forces. During the search operation, an exchange of fire took place,” police said in a post on X.
This is the third encounter since Tuesday in north Kashmir. In earlier two encounters, two militants were killed in separate encounters in Kupwara and Bandipora districts.
