The Jammu and Kashmir government on Saturday said that it has filed a review petition before the Supreme Court in connection with the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) issue.
Education Minister Sakina Itoo said that the government had consistently pursued the matter and remained committed to safeguarding the interests of teachers affected by the Supreme Court verdict.
“As committed, the review petition has been filed before the Hon’ble Supreme Court. The Government has consistently pursued this matter and remains fully committed to safeguarding the interests of our teachers,” Itoo said in a post on X.
The development comes after the Supreme Court in last week of May dismissed petitions seeking a review of its 2025 judgment that made TET mandatory even for teachers appointed before the implementation of the Right to Education (RTE) Act, 2009.
Earlier on May 30, Itoo had said that the government had acted “responsibly and proactively” on the issue and had already accorded sanction for filing a review petition before the apex court.
She had stated that the Department of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, through a communication dated May 26 had directed its standing counsel to initiate the necessary legal proceedings.
The issue has triggered political row in Jammu and Kashmir, with former chief minister and PDP president Mehbooba Mufti accusing the government of remaining silent while other states moved review petitions before the Supreme Court to protect the interests of affected teachers.
Mehbooba had said that despite earlier assurances of support, the Jammu and Kashmir government had failed to act in time, raising concerns among teachers facing uncertainty following the apex court judgment.
The TET issue has become a major concern for thousands of in service teachers in Jammu and Kashmir, who fear the impact of the Supreme Court ruling on their service conditions.
