J&K: Police in Ganderbal detain man for misusing 112 helpline number

Police in Jammu and Kashmir’s Ganderbal district have detained an individual for allegedly misusing the 112 emergency helpline number multiple times.

According to police, on February 2, at around 8 pm, Police Post Shadipora received an alert through 112 via Police Control Room Ganderbal, in which the caller reported that his wife had been assaulted and sought immediate police intervention.

Acting swiftly, a police team was dispatched to the location. However, on reaching the spot, the caller’s mobile phone was found switched off and subsequent verification confirmed that the complaint was false

.
Police said further enquiry brought to light that the caller identified as Parvaiz Ahmad Saeed of Narayanbagh, was a habitual offender who has repeatedly made fake distress calls, including three false complaints during January 2026 through 112 emergency helpline number .

“His actions were found to be deliberate, aimed at creating unnecessary panic and diverting police attention from genuine emergencies,” a police statement said.

“ Based on the statements of his wife and other family members, and in view of his repeated misuse of emergency services, the individual was detained under preventive provisions of law to safeguard the sanctity and importance of the ERSS-112 emergency response system.”

Police said misuse of this vital service not only leads to legal consequences but also hampers timely assistance to those in real distress.
