J&K: Vehicles buried under debris as flash floods trigger landslide in Kishtwar

Date:

Several vehicles were buried under debris and caused extensive damage today when heavy rainfall triggered a major landslide near the 540 MW Kwar Hydroelectric Power Project in the Kishtwar district of Jammu and Kashmir.

Official sources said that vehicles were trapped beneath the mudslide, with many suffering severe damage, adding, “Rescue teams and heavy machinery have been pressed into service to recover the affected vehicles and restore normal access to the area.”

However, flash floods also wreaked havoc in parts of Doda district, disrupting normal life and causing damage at several locations.

“There were no immediate reports of any loss of life,” they said.

Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh, in a post on X, said, “Spoke to Divisional Commissioner Ramesh Kumar after receiving the news from Kishtwar about flash flood water gushing into the premises of the under-construction 540 MW KWAR Hydroelectric Project.”

“Luckily there is no loss of life or property. Some of the project-related machinery has also been removed without any damage,” he posted.

He further posted that overall, every component of the under-construction project remains intact without any damage whatsoever.
