Widespread light to moderate rain and snowfall is likely across the Kashmir division and the Pir Panjal region over the next 24 hours, while the plains of Jammu division may witness scattered light rain accompanied by thunderstorms, the Meteorological Department said on Tuesday.
According to the weather forecast, fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate rain, snow and thundershowers are expected to continue across Jammu and Kashmir over the subsequent two days as well.
MeT said weather conditions on December 30 are expected to remain generally cloudy, with light rain or snowfall likely at many places towards late afternoon or evening.
“From Dec 31 to the morning or forenoon of January 1, the weather will remain generally cloudy with the possibility of light to moderate rain or snowfall at most places, while a few higher and extreme higher reaches of north and central Kashmir may receive moderate to heavy snowfall,” they said.
There is a possibility that plains including Srinagar city may also receive first snowfall of the season in the next three days.
Authorities have warned of possible disruption of surface transport in higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir due to isolated spells of heavy snowfall. The Meteorological Department has advised people, especially those travelling to higher reaches, to remain cautious in view of the expected snowfall and changing weather conditions.
Meanwhile, night temperatures across the region have remained above normal, with minimum temperatures staying 4–5°C higher than average at many places in Kashmir and 1–4°C above normal at several locations in Jammu division.
Gulmarg recorded the lowest minimum temperature in Kashmir division at minus 1.6°C, while Bhaderwah was the coldest place in Jammu division with a minimum of 3.8°C.
Srinagar registered a minimum temperature of 1.0°C, Qazigund 1.4°C, Pahalgam minus 1.2°C, Kupwara 2.0°C and Kokernag 1.8°C.
