Kashmir in grip of cold wave as Srinagar records season’s coldest night

Cold continues to maintain its grip over the Kashmir with Srinagar recording the coldest night of the season at –4.4°C, the Meteorological Department said.


Several places in south and north Kashmir witnessed severe sub-zero conditions.


The tourist resort of Pahalgam in Anantnag district was the coldest among the Valley’s major stations.


Srinagar recorded a low of –4.4°C. while Qazigund settled at –4.0°C. Pahalgam was the coldest among the major stations at –5.0°C, followed by Kupwara at –4.4°C. Kokernag registered –1.6°C and the famous ski resort of Gulmarg recorded –1.0°C, the Meteorological Department said.


According to the MeT department, the minimum temperatures remained 2–4°C below normal in many parts of Kashmir and 1–4°C below normal in several areas of Jammu division.

The weather office has forecast mainly dry conditions across Jammu and Kashmir till December 1 with no significant change expected.


Due to the cold conditions, the winter vacation was announced for Kindergarten classes in all the valley schools from yesterday while other classes will break for vacations in phased manner from December 1.
