Kashmir remains in cold wave grip despite marginal temperature rise

Kashmir witnessed a marginal rise in night temperatures on Monday, but the Valley remained in the grip of a harsh cold wave as sub-zero conditions persisted across the region.

The Meteorological Department has predicted mainly dry weather across Jammu and Kashmir over the next 24 hours, with only a slight possibility of very light rain or snow at one or two high-altitude locations.

For the subsequent two days, the MeT office said the weather is expected to remain largely dry across the region

MeT said minimum temperatures across Jammu and Kashmir remained close to normal, ranging between 0°C and 3°C at many places in the Kashmir division and 0°C to 1°C above normal in parts of the Jammu division.


The tourist resort of Pahalgam in south Kashmir recorded the lowest night temperature.


MeT said with Srinagar recorded a minimum of –1.9°C, a sharp improvement from –4.4°C the previous night.

Qazigund in south Kashmir settled at –1.0°C against –3.0°C, while tourist resort of Pahalgam registered –0.4°C compared to the previous –5.6°C.

In north Kashmir, Kupwara recorded –3.2°C, easing from –5.0°C a night earlier.

South Kashmir’s Kokernag saw temperatures climb to 0.2°C from –1.2°C, and the ski resort of Gulmarg recorded 0.3°C, up significantly from –1.4°C the previous night.

Kashmir’s Independent weather observer said a light spell of snow was recorded at Minimarg Zojila Pass in Ganderbal district last night.
