Kashmir sees sub-zero nights, day temperatures slightly above normal

Night temperatures remained below freezing at several locations, while daytime temperatures hovered slightly above normal across Kashmir, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Monday.


A weak Western Disturbance is likely to affect Jammu & Kashmir on Tuesday, bringing light rain and snow at many places, with moderate precipitation at a few locations.


In Srinagar, the summer capital recorded a maximum temperature of 10.6°C, about 0.8°C above normal, while the minimum temperature settled at 1.1°C, around 1.4°C above the seasonal average.


Qazigund, the gateway town of Kashmir, registered a day temperature of 11.2°C, which was 2°C above normal, while the minimum dipped to 0.3°C, nearly 1.5°C above normal.


The tourist resort of Pahalgam recorded a maximum of 10.8°C, about 4.2°C above normal, while the night temperature plunged to –3.6°C, nearly 4.8°C below normal, making it one of the coldest places in the Valley.


Similarly, the ski resort of Gulmarg witnessed a maximum temperature of 4.8°C, over 3°C above normal, while the minimum fell sharply to –4.4°C.


In north Kashmir, Kupwara recorded a maximum temperature of 11.7°C, nearly 2.8°C above normal, while the minimum dropped to –3.3°C, remaining below the seasonal average.


The IMD said no rainfall or snowfall was recorded across the Valley during the past 24 hours. However, the weather department has forecast isolated light rain and snowfall over Jammu and Kashmir during the next 24 hours.


The outlook for the subsequent two days indicates widespread to isolated light rain and snowfall, with the possibility of thunderstorms at isolated places, particularly over the higher reaches.
