Kashmir violence persists, situation unchanged since 2019: Omar Abdullah

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Wednesday said that the situation in Jammu and Kashmir has not improved since the 2019 constitutional changes.

“The ground reality in Kashmir remains the same,” Omar said.

“What can I say about the current situation If it is not exploding in Delhi, then it is exploding here (Kashmir),” Omar told reporters in Kulgam after inaugurating the J&K Regional Trade Fair, celebrating the district’s growing entrepreneurial spirit.

He added that innocent people continue to lose their lives to violence.

“Yesterday, I went to five places to offer condolences to those killed in the Nowgam police station blast. Today, I am going to two more places,” he said.

Omar said the people of Jammu and Kashmir had been promised an end to bloodshed after August 2019, but the situation remains unchanged.

“We want this ( violence) to stop. In 30–35 years, Jammu Kashmir and especially Kashmir have seen a lot of bloodshed. We were told that after 2019, this will stop. But it didn’t happen,” Omar said.

He also questioned those responsible for maintaining security in the region, noting that political leaders cannot be held accountable.

“Why didn’t it stop You will have to ask those people who are responsible for our security. We don’t have that responsibility,” he stressed.
