Srinagar: Citing the thrashing of a Sub District Magistrate by Army on the Srinagar- Jammu highway and “mutilation” of bodies of militants, Peoples Democratic Party( PDP) chief Mehbooba Mufti Wednesday said there was Jungle Raj in Kashmir and the “India to which Sheikh Abdullah and Maharaja Hari Singh had acceded to seemed to not exist anymore.
“Today, there is so much of oppression and atrocities that Kashmiris shiver and think which India did we accede to!” Mehbooba told reporters on the sidelines of a party rally in Anantnag.
She said the India to which Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah and Maharaja Hari Singh had acceded to didn’t seem to exist any longer. “That India was the country of Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs and everyone,” she said.
“There is a law of jungle here. Yesterday an SDM and other staffers with him were beaten up by the Army. Prison inmates are beaten up, bodies (of militants killed) in encounters are mutilated and burnt by some chemical..,” the former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister said.
At another rally in the south Kashmir district, she told reporters that she had refused to follow diktats on banning Jamaat-e-Islami and launching a crackdown against Hurriyat leaders including Syed Ali Geelani and Mehbooba Mufti.
“It wasn’t me who brought POTA and NIA to Jammu and Kashmir or remained mute when Afzal Guru was hanged,” she said in response to National Conference leader Omar Abdullah’s remarks blaming the PDP-BJP government for the current situation in the state.
Earlier addressing a series of party rallies, Mehbooba said the highway ban and how it was affecting the patients suffering from terminal diseases, undermined basic human rights besides affecting Kashmir’s economy.
Cautioning that any attempt aimed at fiddling with the special status of Jammu and Kashmir which is sternly opposed by the people of the state, she said. (GNS)
