Lashkar militant killed in J&K’s Shopian

Date:

A Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorist was killed in an ongoing anti-terror operation in the Shopian district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said on Wednesday.

The anti-terror operation in the Chanapora area of Shopian has been going on since Saturday evening after security forces launched a joint cordon and a search operation in the area following an intelligence input about the presence of two militants. A brief exchange of fire took place on Saturday evening.

Confirming the killing of an LeT militant, the Jammu and Kashmir Police, in a post on X, said, “You can run, but you can’t hide! One Lashkar terrorist neutralised by SOG Shopian, in a joint operation, along with RR and CRPF.”

Earlier, a police officer said a few gunshots were heard from the area during the operation, to which security forces responded.

“Later, a body was observed at the spot. Arms and ammunition are also visible,” the officer said.

This is the first gun battle in South Kashmir in nearly ten months. The last such encounter took place on September 8–9, when two soldiers and two LeT militants—one a Pakistani national and the other a local recruit—were killed during a gunfight in the Gader forest area of Kulgam district.
