Mehbooba Mufti seeks special J&K Assembly session over AAP MLA Mehraj Malik’s arrest

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti on Saturday urged Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather to convene a special session to condemn the detention of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) legislator Mehraj Malik under the Public Safety Act (PSA).

Calling for a united stand, Mufti said such a resolution would send a strong message to New Delhi, pressuring the Centre to release Malik and safeguard legislators from future political targeting.

“I urge Hon’ble Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather to call a special Assembly session to condemn the PSA & arrest of MLA Mehraj Malik. A resolution can put pressure on the Centre government to release Mehraj Malik & protect all MLAs from future targeting,” Mufti said in a post on X.

Malik, who also heads AAP’s J&K unit, was arrested earlier this week on charges of disturbing public order and shifted to Kathua jail. His detention triggered violent protests in Doda, prompting authorities to clamp restrictions and suspend mobile and broadband services.

Mufti further stressed that Malik requires political solidarity more than legal assistance. She also urged Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to extend legal aid to underprivileged Kashmiris incarcerated across the country.

“Also, CM @OmarAbdullah should extend legal aid to thousands of poor Kashmiris languishing in jails across India. They need it the most. Mehraj can fight his legal battle what he needs is a strong political stand expressed through assembly,” she wrote.(KINS)
