MeT Issues Weather Advisory, Predicts WD-Induced ‘Widespread’ Rain, Snow in J&K

In light of an expected Western Disturbance (WD) to affect J&K and other adjoining areas on coming Thursday’s late night, the MeT Centre Srinagar on Tuesday issued a weather advisory and warned of subsequent “widespread moderate” rain/snowfall in the UT

As per the news agency CNS, MeT Centre Srinagar head Dr. Mukhtar Ahmed in a weather advisory addressed to Divisional Commissioners of Jammu and Kashmir divisions said, “An active Western disturbance most likely to affect J&K and adjoining areas from 29th evening/night onwards. Under the influence of this system, Widespread Moderate Rain/snow is expected in Jammu and Kashmir from 29th night/early morning of 01 March, 2024 till the afternoon of 3th March 2024 with its peak activity on 2nd March.”

It further added that “the above system would most likely cause heavy to very heavy rain/snow over Pir Panjal Range of Jammu Division and middle & higher reaches of Kashmir Division (Anantnag-Pahalgam, Kulgam, Sinthan Pass, Shupiyan-Pir Ki Gali, Sonamarg-Zojila, Bandipora-Razdan Pass, Gulmarg and Kupwara-Sadhna Pass).”

With the likely occurrence of moderate snow/rain, the MeT Centre Srinagar said, the activity may lead to disruption of surface and air transport including Jammu- Srinagar National Highway besides other major roads of middle and higher reaches of J&K.

“People in snow bound areas are asked to avoid venturing into sloppy and avalanche prone areas. Chances of landslides, mudslides and shooting stones most likely over the vulnerable areas. Farmers are advised to withhold all farm operations during 1st week of March,” it added in the weather advisory.
