New Zealand Cricket CEO to step down after stakeholder differences

New Zealand Cricket (NZC) chief executive Scott Weenink on Friday announced he will step down from his role on January 30, 2026, citing differences with some Member Associations and the New Zealand Cricket Players’ Association (NZCPA) over the future priorities and long-term direction of the game.

In a media statement, Weenink said, “After careful consideration, it has become clear that I hold a different view from several Member Associations, and the NZCPA, on the future priorities for NZC, including the long-term direction of the game and the best role for T20 cricket in New Zealand.”

“Given these differences, I believe it is in the best interests of the organisation that new leadership takes NZC forward from here,” Weenink said, adding that he did not wish to create ongoing instability by continuing without the support of some stakeholders.

Weenink, who has led NZC for the past two and a half years, said it had been a privilege to serve as CEO and highlighted a period of strong performance both on and off the field. Under his leadership, NZC recorded its strongest financial results to date and secured long-term broadcast agreements with Sky and Sony, placing the organisation in a “strong financial position”.

“Our people have driven a culture of strong engagement and commitment,” he said, expressing pride in the progress made during his tenure.

The departing CEO also paid tribute to New Zealand’s national teams, acknowledging the BLACKCAPS and WHITE FERNS for the pride they have brought to the country. Among the highlights of his time in charge, Weenink cited the WHITE FERNS’ T20 World Cup triumph and the BLACKCAPS’ series victory over India, along with their appearance in the ICC Champions Trophy final.

Weenink thanked NZC staff, stakeholders, and the wider cricket community for their support and acknowledged the relationships built with the New Zealand Government, the International Cricket Council (ICC), member nations, including the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), and Cricket Australia, as well as media, broadcast, and commercial partners.

While expressing sadness at leaving the role, Weenink said he departs with confidence in the people within NZC to continue carrying the game forward. He confirmed that, subject to regulatory approvals, he will return to the role of Executive Chair of Xceda Group in the new year.

NZC Board Chair Diana Puketapu-Lyndon thanked Weenink for his contribution to the organisation.
“NZC acknowledges and thanks Scott for his positive contribution to New Zealand Cricket during his time as CEO, and wishes him well for the future,” she said.
