Leader of Opposition in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, Sunil Kumar Sharma, on Thursday accused Chief Minister Omar Abdullah of rewarding the main accused in the 2012 MBBS entrance paper leak scam by granting him an extension in service and later appointing him as a consultant after retirement.
In a statement, Sharma alleged that the people of Jammu and Kashmir have not forgotten what he described as the “biggest MBBS entrance paper leak scam” and claimed that Omar Abdullah has no moral authority to lecture others on transparency and accountability.
“Before portraying himself as a champion of transparency, the Chief Minister should remember that he granted an extension to Mushtaq Peer, the then BOPEE chairman and the main accused in the alleged sale of Common Entrance Test (CET)-2012 question papers for monetary gains. He was later appointed as a consultant for fast-track recruitment of Class IV posts. The people of Jammu and Kashmir know who patronized the main accused,” Sharma said.
The BJP leader further questioned why the Omar Abdullah-led government and the investigating agencies, which functioned under him when he was both Chief Minister and Home Minister of the erstwhile state, allegedly failed to act on the scam until the High Court intervened.
He said the High Court took cognizance of the matter after the Amicus Curiae informed the court about reports that JKCET-2012 question papers had been sold before the scheduled examination in exchange for huge sums of money, despite specific complaints having been made to the Vigilance Organisation and the Crime Branch.
Sharma also alleged that Omar Abdullah was ignoring past controversies while targeting others, claiming that allegations of a paper leak had also surfaced during the Junior Engineer (Electrical) examination conducted in 2025.
“The people of Jammu and Kashmir have not forgotten these incidents, and selective memory cannot erase history,” Sharma added.(KINS)
