A total of 56,298 Mexicans have been repatriated from the United States since Jan. 20 this year, including 12,183 arriving by air, the government said Monday.
At a press conference, Undersecretary of Human Rights, Population and Migration Arturo Medina said that the government's repatriation program "Mexico Embraces You," launched in response to U.S. immigration crackdowns, has received 24,082 nationals at border care centers.
So far, over 92,246 food rations have been distributed to returnees, along with 9,786 medical and 4,019 psychological services. They have also received legal advice and support for victims of gender-based violence.
"More than 19,282 people were given a Paisano Welfare Card, which offers 2,000 pesos (105 U.S. dollars) for travel expenses to their communities of origin, and our fellow citizens have been incorporated into Bienestar (welfare) programs," Medina said.
Returning nationals have also received assistance in obtaining ID cards and birth certificates. Additionally, with private-sector support, 2,495 people have been connected to job opportunities, the official said.
