In a significant move aimed at strengthening surveillance on narcotics offenders, Anantnag Police on Tuesday installed a GPS-enabled tracking anklet on an accused booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act who was recently granted bail by a court.
Police said the GPS anklet was affixed to accused Aejaz Ahmad Tantray, son of Manzoor Ahmad Tantray, a resident of Kapran Verinag presently residing at Prakeshpora Anchidoora in Anantnag, in compliance with directions issued by the court to ensure continuous monitoring of his movements and adherence to bail conditions.
A GPS tracking anklet is a wearable electronic device secured around the ankle that enables real-time location tracking of the accused and helps authorities monitor compliance with restrictions imposed by the court.
According to police, the accused is involved in FIR No. 49/2026 registered under Sections 8/21 of the NDPS Act at Police Station Dooru. The tracking device was installed as a mandatory condition of bail.
Police said the initiative reflects the use of modern technology in tackling drug trafficking and substance abuse while ensuring strict monitoring and accountability of habitual narcotics offenders.(KINS)
