The residents of Sher Colony and Khushal Matoo localities of Sopore town on Tuesday staged a protest against the installation of smart meters in their vicinities.

Scores of women took to the streets and raised slogans against the power department near Jamia Masjid and Hathishas areas, saying they won’t allow installation of smart meters. They blocked the road; however, the vehicular traffic was restored after police intervention.

Talking to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), the agitated people said their families are not in a position to pay “excessive bills generated by these devices”. We are poor families here, and the majority of our men are daily wagers, thus we can’t pay the bills, they said.

“We are already paying regular bills, why install such a device that is going to burden our lives? No one is rich enough to afford the enormous electricity costs,” said Shameena from Sher Colony. “Owing to the skyrocketing prices of essentials, our family budget is already stressed. We won’t be able to meet the additional expenses,” she added
