Election to the post of the Srinagar Mayor has been deferred by two days to July 16 even as the Congress is yet to take a call over which candidate to support.

Former Deputy Mayor Sheikh Imran and former Mayor Junaid Mattu will be contesting the election that was earlier scheduled for July 14.

While both Sheikh Imran and Junaid Mattu have been wooing the Congress for support, the party is still undecided.

“We will be holding a meeting tomorrow to take a final call. Initially, we wanted to support Mattu but today there were reports that the BJP councillors will be supporting him. We do not want to side with a candidate that has the support of the BJP. Earlier, the BJP councillors had assured support to Imran. We are keeping a close watch,” said a senior Congress leader.(TNS)
