Supreme Court Notice To J&K Administration On Bar President ’s Plea

The Supreme Court on Friday issued notice to the Jammu and Kashmir administration on a petition filed by Kashmir Bar Association president Mian Qayoom challenging a recent J&K High Court verdict upholding his detention under the Public Safety Act.

A Bench, headed by Justice SK Kaul, asked the J&K administration to respond to the petition and posted the matter for hearing in the first week of July after summer vacation.

It directed the authorities to provide him summer clothing and daily essentials in Tihar Jail, where he is currently lodged.

Qayoom — who suffers from many ailments — has been under detention since August 5, 2019, following the nullification of Article 370 of the Constitution.

On May 28, a Division Bench of the J&K High Court had dismissed Qayoom’s petition against his detention under the Public Safety Act. (TNS)
