Trump believes deal with Iran still possible despite US strikes after helicopter downing

US President Donald Trump told ABC News that a deal with Iran is still possible despite the US strikes in retaliation for the downing of the Apache helicopter.

“I believe in responding in a strong manner. I always have throughout my life. And we have a deal that was very good, and probably will,” Trump said.

He called the US strikes a “very strong, very powerful” response to the helicopter incident.

On Tuesday, Trump claimed that the helicopter had been downed by the Islamic Republic while it was patrolling the Strait of Hormuz. The president underscored that the United States must retaliate over the attack.

The US Central Command said it had launched “self-defence” strikes. According to Axios, the United States hit air defence systems and radars around the Strait of Hormuz.

Following the US strikes, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said that the Iranian military would not let any attack or threat go unanswered, and called on the United States to leave the region.
