Srinagar: Two soldiers were killed when militants on Saturday attacked an army convoy in South Kashmir’s Qazigund area on the Srinagar -Jammu national highway; four soldiers were also injured in the attack.

Officials said that an army convoy that was on way to Srinagar from Jammu was attacked near Hillar village on the national highway. Six soldiers were injured in the attack who were shifted to Army’s Base hospital in Srinagar where two succumbed to their injuries.

Officials said that militants were hiding in the bushes and trees and fired towards the army convoy for a brief time before fleeing from the area.

The Army and the Special Operation Group of JK police launched search operation to track the militants responsible for the attack. The Srinagar Jammu national highway was closed for the traffic for half an hour. No militant outfit claimed responsibility for the attack.

Today’s attack comes a day after Army chief General Bipin Rawat along with senior army commanders chaired high level meeting at 15 Corps headquarters. Two months ago in a similar attack at Bemina three soldiers were injured when militants targeted an army convoy. The militants have managed to target conveys despite the security from the Road Opening Parties. The 35 kilometers stretch from Bijbhera to Pampore is considered most venerable spot on the national highway as militants have managed to carry out several attacks on this stretch causing damage to the forces in past.
