Ahead of Pulwama attack anniversary, searches conducted at Lal Chowk

Ahead of the seventh anniversary of the 2019 Pulwama attack, in which 40 CRPF personnel were killed, Police conducted a search operation in Srinagar’s city Centre.

Security has been beefed up across J&K ahead of the Pulwama attack anniversary.

Officials said Jammu and Kashmir Police conducted surprise checks and search operations in Lal Chowk on Friday. Searches were also carried out in hotels in the area, while identity cards of pedestrians were verified during the operation.

Officials said searches in Lal Chowk were carried out to prevent any potential security threat.

Security has also been intensified around sensitive installations and marketplaces.

On February 14, 2019, a local suicide bomber, Adil Ahmad Dar of Jaish-e-Mohammed, rammed an explosives-laden vehicle into a CRPF convoy bus at Lethpora in Pulwama, killing 40 personnel. The attack was followed by the Balakot airstrike. Pakistan retaliated the next day, triggering a brief aerial dogfight that brought India and Pakistan to the brink of war.
