Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to fulfil his commitment to restore statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, saying people were hopeful that the promise would be honoured within the first year of the government’s tenure.

Addressing a press conference in Jammu as the National Conference (NC) government completed its first year in office, Abdullah said his administration has remained steadfast in pursuing the demand for the restoration of statehood.

“We were hopeful that the Centre would fulfil its promise to restore statehood to Jammu and Kashmir in the first year of our government, but it has not happened. I request the Prime Minister and his team to honour the assurance made to our people by restoring statehood,” Abdullah said.

He said the NC government has already taken steps in this direction, including bringing a resolution in support of restoring the region’s statehood.

Reaffirming his government’s commitment to the promises made in its election manifesto, Omar Abdullah said his administration is working tirelessly for the betterment and progress of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

“When we sought votes from the people, it was not for one year but for the full five-year term. People have started raising questions, but I want to tell them — please ask those questions after five years,” the Chief Minister remarked.

Abdullah reiterated that the NC government remains dedicated to fulfilling every commitment made to the people and will continue to advocate for their rights and aspirations, including the early restoration of full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir.(KINS)
