Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) president today launched a hunger strike campaign of the party to demand the restoration of statehood.
A similar hunger strike will be observed in Jammu tomorrow.
Karra sat on the hunger strike at the party’s head office along with senior leaders of the party, including AICC general secretary Ghulam Ahmad Mir and party MLAs.
Karra accused the Centre of “turning blind, deaf and dumb” to the grievances of the people.
Addressing reporters, Karra said the party had been campaigning for statehood restoration under the campaign ” Hamri Riyasat Hamara Haq” for the past six months and had organised a series of outreach programmes in Srinagar, Jammu and Delhi, which, he claimed, had received overwhelming support from civil society, traders, and various sectors.
He recalled that on August 5, 2019, the erstwhile state of J&K was downgraded and its constitutional rights were taken away, the party observed the anniversary as a “black day.”
He linked the launch of the hunger strike to the anniversary of the “Quit India Movement”, saying the protest was aimed at shaking the “unwilling and inactive government of Delhi” into action.
” We will hold a hunger strike in all districts of J&K up to August 21 and the next phase of the programme will be decided after reviewing developments in Parliament’s ongoing session,” he said.
