Nationwide emergency alert test conducted; Mobile phones buzz across J&K

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) on Saturday conducted a nationwide test of the Cell Broadcast Alert System to strengthen emergency communication infrastructure across the country.

The exercise was carried out in Delhi-NCR and the capital cities of all States and Union Territories. During the test, citizens received emergency alert notifications on their mobile phones, accompanied by a loud sound or vibration.

Officials clarified that the message was only a test alert and did not indicate any real emergency. The exercise was aimed at assessing the effectiveness, reach and responsiveness of the alert system in disseminating critical information during disasters.

Authorities said the initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance preparedness and ensure timely warnings can be delivered to the public during natural or man-made emergencies.

Mobile phone users across Jammu and Kashmir also received the alerts around 11:42 am, with many initially startled by the loud notification sound before realising it was part of an official test.

According to officials, the Cell Broadcast-based alert system has been developed using indigenous technology to ensure people receive timely warnings during emergencies. Citizens were informed that no action was required, as the message was only a trial.

The alert message stated that the system is designed for instant disaster warnings and may appear multiple times during testing.

Officials said such nationwide trials are being conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the mobile-based disaster alert mechanism and improve public preparedness during emergencies. (KINS)
