Police on Monday prevented Congress leaders and workers from holding a protest march in Srinagar against the India–US trade deal and the ongoing conflict in West Asia.

Leaders and workers of the Srinagar District Congress Committee had gathered at the party headquarters on Maulana Azad Road to stage the demonstration. The protest aimed to oppose the trade agreement, which party leaders said would adversely affect farmers and small businesses in the country.

The protesters had planned a peaceful march from the Congress headquarters, but a large police presence at the office gate barred them from moving onto the road.

During the protest, protesters raised slogans against the BJP and accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of “compromising national interests.”

The demonstration was led by Congress MLA Nizamuddin Bhat, who, along with other leaders, criticised the trade deal and voiced concern over the ongoing situation in West Asia. Protesters were seen chanting slogans.

The party workers continued their protest inside the party headquarters, raising slogans and reiterating their demand for safeguarding the interests of farmers and small traders.
