CPI (M) Protests in Jammu against US military action in Venezuela

Activists of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Tuesday staged a protest in Jammu condemning the US military operation in Venezuela, with senior party leader and Kulgam MLA M.Y. Tarigami urged the Centre to review its statement and issue a strong condemnation of what he termed as “open aggression” against a sovereign nation.

Raising slogans and holding placards against the Donald Trump-led US administration, CPI(M) workers gathered at a park here and held a peaceful demonstration opposing the military action that reportedly led to the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.

Addressing reporters, Tarigami said the US action was a blatant violation of international law and the United Nations Charter. “The Trump administration has openly displayed aggression against a sovereign Latin American country and used force against unarmed people. This is nothing short of barbarism,” he said.

He warned that such actions weaken the authority of the UN Security Council and erode the international legal framework meant to prevent aggression against independent nations. Tarigami added that the incident has triggered “historic mass protests across the world,” with civil society groups and political parties in India also voicing opposition to the US move.

“The US has a long history of spreading baseless narratives to justify military interventions and impose its will on other countries, in total disregard of international norms. The abduction of an elected president and his wife should alarm the entire world,” he said.

The CPI(M) leader also criticised a reported remark by former US President Donald Trump claiming that India had reduced its purchase of crude oil from Russia to “make him happy.” Calling the comment “insane and humiliating,” Tarigami asserted that India is a sovereign nation that formulates its policies independently and has always upheld strategic autonomy.(KINS)
