The uncertainty surrounding Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharma’s participation in pre-tournament engagements in Pakistan for the ICC Champions Trophy has become a key talking point, with newly-appointed BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia confirming that a decision is yet to be made.
“Whether Rohit Sharma travels to Pakistan for ICC media engagements is something that’s still not decided,” Saikia stated, reflecting the ongoing deliberations within the Indian cricket board.
The events in question, including the captains’ meet and pre-event press conference in Lahore, traditionally herald ICC tournaments and provide an opportunity for team leaders to outline their plans and goals. However, after India declined to tour Pakistan, leading to the adoption of a hybrid model for the Champions Trophy, questions over Rohit’s attendance have intensified.
The matter is complicated by logistical and security considerations, with speculation rife that the ICC might relocate these engagements to the UAE. However, such a move would create significant logistical challenges for teams scheduled to play in Pakistan.
Meanwhile, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has expressed disappointment over India’s approach. A senior PCB official accused the BCCI of politicising cricket, pointing to reports that the India might avoid displaying Pakistan’s name on their jerseys.
The ICC Champions Trophy is set to kick off on February 19 in Karachi, with Pakistan facing New Zealand in the opening match. India will begin their campaign against Bangladesh on February 20.
