Kashmir’s chief cleric and Hurriyat chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Monday alleged that he was put under house arrest ahead of his visit to a religious place.
Mirwaiz was scheduled to deliver a sermon at Imam Bara Bemina on the invitation of Aga Syed Haadi as a gesture of Shia-Sunni unity and shared reverence for Hazrat Imam Hussain and the martyrs of Karbala. The visit was aimed at paying tribute to their timeless sacrifice and highlighting the message of unity, peace, and brotherhood inspired by Karbala.
Mirwaiz said he has been placed under house arrest and prevented from attending the gathering.
“Kashmir has always stood as a beacon of mutual respect, brotherhood, and religious harmony,” he said.
He observed that at a time when society faces challenges on multiple fronts, unity, restraint, mutual respect, and standing together are more important than ever.
He emphasised that no divisive force should be allowed to weaken the centuries-old bonds of communal harmony and coexistence that have long defined the people of Kashmir.
Appealing to people across all sections of society, Mirwaiz urged everyone to uphold dignity, patience, and mutual respect and to honour the enduring message of Karbala by remaining steadfast in truth, compassion, justice, and unity.
There was no word from police on Mirwaiz’s claim of house arrest.
