Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Monday called for redefining tourism in Jammu and Kashmir as a shared responsibility towards nature, culture and society, stressing that the sector must be sustainable, inclusive and beneficial to local communities.
Addressing the Ethical Tourism Conclave organised by the Tourist Trade Interest Guild, J&K, the Lieutenant Governor said ethical tourism should be the guiding principle for the future of the Union Territory’s tourism sector.
Referring to the conclave’s theme, “Responsible Today, Sustainable Tomorrow, Beneficial for All,” Sinha said tourism should not only attract visitors but also preserve Jammu and Kashmir’s natural and cultural heritage for future generations.
Highlighting the growth of the sector over the past six years, he said Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed record tourist arrivals, increased investments and expanded employment opportunities.
However, he added that the real success of tourism lies in ensuring prosperity, dignity and opportunities reach every household.
The Lieutenant Governor said tourism must empower local stakeholders, including shikara operators, pony owners, artisans, homestay operators and youth, rather than limiting benefits to large businesses alone.
He also stressed the need to protect forests, lakes and rivers while promoting eco-friendly tourism practices such as reducing single-use plastic, proper waste management, conserving water and energy, and respecting wildlife.
Calling for concrete action, Sinha proposed eco-certification for hotels and homestays, skill development programmes for youth, and greater use of digital platforms to directly connect tourists with local communities.
“Ethical tourism is a collective resolve. Together, let us ensure that prosperity reaches the last village, the last family and the last citizen in the queue,” he said. (KINS)
