Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann and Sports Minister Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer on Thursday expressed profound grief and sorrow over the sad demise of former Olympian and veteran Boxer Kaur Singh who breathed his last in a private hospital at Kurukshetra this morning.
Kaur Singh is survived by two sons and a daughter.
In a condolence message, the CM said that Kaur Singh made India proud by earning name and fame in the national as well as international arena of Boxing. He said that from Khanaal Khurd in Sangrur, Kaur Singh shined like a star in the world of Boxing and won Gold Medal in Asian Games.
Mr Mann said that the veteran Boxer also represented the country in Olympic games adding that the life and contribution of Kaur Singh will inspire the budding players to work hard and excel in the field of sports.
Sports minister, describing Kaur Singh’s departure as a big loss for the Indian sports field, especially boxing, said that Padma Shri and Arjuna Award winner Kaur Singh had brought laurels to Punjab and the country on the international stage. Apart from winning a gold medal in the 1982 Asian Games, Kaur Singh also won gold medals in Asian Championship and King’s Cup. He also represented India in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games. He fought a historic bout with World Class Boxer Muhammad Ali. He served in the Indian Army and Punjab Police for a long time. The state government has made the biography of this distinguished boxer part of the school syllabus for this academic session.
He said that Kaur Singh’s life of struggle and sporting achievements will remain an inspiration for generations to come.
