A massive combing operation is underway in Jammu and Kashmir’s Bandipora district after security forces and militants exchanged fire in the morning hours on Wednesday.

Police said a contact was established between terrorists and security forces in the Renji forest area of Aragam, Bandipora.

Official sources said the contact was established when joint forces were carrying out a cordon and a search operation in the forest area

“There has been a lull after the initial exchange of fire,” they said, adding additional forces have been rushed to the area to ensure a tight cordon. “Search operation is going on,” the police said.

This month there have been two gun battles in the Kashmir region, which is gearing up for the Lok Sabha polls in three phases.

Two unidentified militants were killed on April 5, as the Army foiled an infiltration bid in the Uri sector of Baramulla district . Six days later a local militant of Lashkar-e-Taiba was killed in an encounter at Frassipora Pulwama .
