Mercury Improves Across Kashmir

Srinagar: Mercury improved further across Kashmir Valley even as the minimum temperatures remained below sub-zero level, the weatherman said on Tuesday.

A meteorological department official told GNS that the mercury increased by nearly a degree Celsius in Srinagar, settling at minus 1.2°C against the previous night’s 2.0°C. The mercury this season, especially last month, consistently remained far below normal. On January 31, the mercury plunged to minus 8.8°C, the coldest January night recorded in Srinagar after 30 years.

Qazigund, the gateway town of J&K, recorded a low of minus 4.3°C against minus 5.5°C on the previous night while the mercury settled at minus 2.2°C in the world-famous tourist resort of Pahalgam against 6.2°C on the previous night.

Kokernag, also in south Kashmir, recorded a low of minus 2.5°C against minus 2.0°C on the previous night, he said.

The mercury also settled at minus 1.6°C in Kupwara against minus 2.0°C on the previous night while Gulmarg, the world-famous skiing resort, recorded a low of minus 3.5°C against minus 2.5°C earlier night, he said.

The weatherman has forecast mainly dry weather over the plains of J&K in the next few days.

“Very light rain/snow is expected at one or two places on higher reaches of J&K and mainly dry weather on the plains of J&K,” the weatherman said. (GNS)
