The Legitimate Desk Minorities
The Prime Minister Narendra Modi who is voted to power again by the Indian people till 2024 finally spoke for the minorities in the country.
Modi’s government who secured the full majority also in 2014 elections was highly criticized for its handling of minorities in the country. The influential newspapers including Time Magazine, The Economist and The Guardian have openly criticized Modi’s policy of making secular India as a Hindutva nation and excluding the minorities like Muslims, Christians and schedule castes in its regime and aiming to reduce them to second class citizens.
The unfortunate incidents of lynching of persons from minorities under his previous rule brought lots of tensions for Modi and his Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP).
Modi though at some occasions denounced lynchings and attacking of minorities by some ultra Hindu nationalists however, could not win the faith and trust of victim communities. This predominantly overshadowed the good he did for his country and world media besides some national local news channels and newspapers focussed on such issues and always asked Modi to curb the trend.
In that context Modi’s speech turned lesser effective and mob lynchings continue to happen for five years of his rule. Interestingly, on Saturday when Narendra Modi on Saturday was addressing the NDA at central Hall, there was already video circulating on social media a Muslim couple being ruthlessly beaten by Hindu extremists in Bhopal suspected for carrying beef.

The chilling barbarity was recorded mercilessly by some people standing and watching this inhumanity by these goons. In fact some people were seen joining these goons and beating them. In the evening Modi addressed his NDA members and asked them to win the trust of minorities. He said the minorities were used as vote bank, hitting out at Congress and said that fear was imbibed among them and were exploited.
Modi who will be the Prime Minister for second successive term urged his MP’s to work for the people irrespective of caste, religion and creed. He termed the second term of his office in working for inclusive Bharat and living upto the expectations of those who voted them and win the trust of those who didn’t vote for them.
The recent landslide victory for BJP seems to have succeeded in breaking the stereotype of caste system in India and seeped through the lower castes given to its unexpected victory in many parts of country. If the BJP higher ups are believed this time they have also succeeded in secure some votes in the minority community and ensured this landslide victory to the party.
This will also go in a long way to bring more responsibility for BJP to protect the minorities and allow the socio-cultural diversity of country to flourish. India has a history of being tolerant to every religion and culture. Given to ongoing unfortunate incidents, the speech and assurance of Prime minister will be seen in a serious manner. Coming five years of Modi will decide the future of country with its minorities.
