NC announces three nominees for Rajya Sabha polls

The Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) today announced its nominees for three of the four vacant Rajya Sabha seats, following a meeting of the party’s high command and core committee.

NC General Secretary Nasir Aslam Wani told reporters that the party has decided to field Chaudhary Mohammad Ramzan, Sajjad Ahmad Kichloo, and Shammi Oberoi as its candidates for the Upper House.

Wani confirmed that three names had been finalised, but a decision on the remaining one seat was still under discussion. It is understood that the NC is holding talks with its alliance partner, the Congress, regarding the fourth seat.

Polling for the four Rajya Sabha seats, which have been vacant since 2021, is scheduled for October 24.

The 90-member Jammu and Kashmir Assembly currently has an effective strength of 88. The NC holds 41 seats, and with the support of the CPI(M)’s lone MLA and five of the seven independents, its strength is 47. The Congress, which has six MLAs, brings the total strength of the NC-Congress alliance to 53. The BJP holds 28 seats.
