After J&K witnessed decline in coronavirus cases, from past two weeks again cases are on rise not only in Kashmir division but also in Jammu division. In last two weeks around 2000 new covid19 cases were found in J&K and most of the cases came from Srinagar and Jammu districts.
Since last one year when the first covid19 case was reported around 1.30 lakh people have turned positive and near two people lost their lives which is a reminder that this disease can’t be taken easy. From last two weeks, Covid19 is again on rise and Srinagar is one of the hotspots of the disease throughout the country.
The number of active cases, which has been rising steadily this month, crossed 2000 on Sunday to reach 2001 in the Union Territory as per official figures. There was a decline in the number of cases in January and February. The highest cases last earlier than Sunday were on December 18 at 388.
The overall active cases in Jammu and Kashmir have doubled in March to reach 1,681 on March 26 from 823 by the end of February. The UT had hit its lowest active cases since May 2020 to reach 593 on February 09.
The UT has witnessed a sharp increase in fresh cases in the second half of March. From 1,293 Covid-19 cases in the first half, the 11 days of the second half contributed 1,679 cases.
For the past 10 days, the daily fresh Covid-19 cases have remained above 100 hovering between 126 and 210 while the lowest daily count this year was on January 08 when just 43 cases had been reported. Even now the cases are touching near about 400.
As Srinagar is witnessing increase in Covid-19 cases, the district administration is not only imposing fines on people but also subjecting them to RAT testing if caught without masks in public. However, it needs to be speeded up.
The cases then began to decline with 19,619 in October, 10,747 in December and plunged to the lowest of 1,935 cases in February 2021 after which it hit the second wave.
The sliver lining is that now we have vaccine available and more than 6.4 lakh people have taken the first jab of vaccination but still lot of people are reluctant to go for vaccination.
Even some people who are the front line workers haven’t taken vaccine yet. The Covid hasn’t gone yet and it is still here and now there are fears of new strains which spread fast so time has come that people as well as the government should adhere to the SoPs, especially when everything is open including schools. Not only common people have been ignoring warning and don’t follow SoPs but government also organized many programs where SoPs were thrown to the wind.
At the one hand government is asking people to religiously follow SoPs on the other hand programs are being held where SoPs are completely ignored. Since the cases are again on rise and hospitals are again filling with covid19 patients, so people should follow discipline if they want to escape from this dreadful disease.
Otherwise, the second wave could turn more lethal. And people should go for vaccination for herd immunity which can save numerous lives. The UT government besides asking people to follow the norms should also avoid the big functions where large crowd gathers till the time more and more people get inoculated that’s the biggest and only defense available with us.
