Paratrooper dead in Kashmir, search for 2nd continues

The body of a missing paratrooper was recovered today during a search operation in the Gadool forests of south Kashmir’s Anantnag district, officials said.

They said efforts are underway to trace the second missing soldier from the Army’s elite para unit.

The two commandos went missing on Monday evening during an anti-militancy operation in the area. A massive search operation was subsequently launched in the dense and treacherous Gadool forests, with helicopters deployed to assist in locating the missing personnel.

“During the search a body with a weapon and rucksack has been retrieved,” a police officer said. He ruled out a terror angle.

The identity of the slain soldier has not been officially released yet.

The Army’s Chinar Corps last night said that the two soldiers went missing during an operation in the area.

“On the intervening night of 6/7 October, an operational team on the Kishtwar range confronted a severe snowstorm and whiteout conditions in the mountains of South Kashmir. Since then, two soldiers have gone out of communication. Intense Search and Rescue operations have been launched but hampered due to prevailing adverse weather conditions,” the Srinagar-based Chinar Corps said.
