Southwest Monsoon to arrive on time: IMD

Date:

Southwest monsoon is set to arrive over Kerala and some parts of Northeastern states in the next three-four days as the conditions continue to remain favourable for the onset of the monsoon over these regions, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Tuesday.

According to the IMD, the remnants of Cyclone Remal over east Bangladesh moved east-northeastwards and lay centred over the same region. The system is likely to move east-northeastwards, and weaken into a Well Marked Low Pressure Area over eastern Assam and neighbourhood by Tuesday evening.

Under its influence, fairly widespread to light to moderate rainfall accompanied with thunderstorm, lightning and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) is likely over Northeastern states for the next seven days.

“Light to moderate rainfall at most places with heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places is very likely over eastern Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland and Manipur on Tuesday,” the IMD said.

The weather department further predicted that heatwave to severe heatwave conditions prevailing over Northwest and Central India are likely to reduce gradually from May 30.

Heat wave to severe heat wave conditions are very likely in most parts of Rajasthan, including parts of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi, and in isolated parts of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh for Tuesday and Wednesday, and will reduce gradually thereafter, it said.

On hot and humid weather, the IMD said, these conditions are very likely to prevail over isolated pockets of Gujarat, Odisha and Jharkhand till Wednesday.
