Srinagar records highest day temperature in April in last over seven decades

At 37.4 degrees Celsius, Srinagar today recorded its highest July temperature in last over seven decades, Meteorological Centre Srinagar said.

The last time a higher temperature was recorded was in 1953, when the maximum had reached 37.7 degrees Celsius. The night temperature settled at 24.5 degrees Celsius.

Kashmir is witnessing a scorching summer since June, with the unrelenting heatwave shattering several records.

According to the Meteorological Centre Srinagar, Srinagar recorded a maximum temperature of 37.4?C today, making it the third highest temperature ever recorded in the city’s history.

This scorching mark is just behind the second highest of 37.7?C recorded on July 5, 1953, and the all-time highest of 38.3?C observed on July 10, 1946.

Independent weather forecaster Faizan Arif said that several temperature records were broken across the Valley.

“Srinagar recorded a staggering 6.7?C above normal day temperature today,” he said, noting the unusually intense heat.

Among tourist destinations, Pahalgam stood out by breaking its all-time record, touching 31.6?C, surpassing the previous 31.5?C set on July 21, 2024.

The Kupwara town in north Kashmir recorded 35.9?C, the highest since 2006.

The gateway town of Kashmir, Qazigund touched 34.6?C, the second-highest July temperature ever recorded there.

The other hill resort of Kokernag saw 34.0?C, also the second-highest for July in the town’s history.

The hill resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir recorded day temperature of 27.6?C, 5.8?C above normal.

There is a possibility of breather from the ongoing heatwave, as the Meteorological Centre Srinagar has forecast scattered light to moderate rain and thundershowers over the Union Territory in the next 24 hours.

The outlook for the next two days suggests a further increase in rainfall activity with fairly widespread light to moderate showers, accompanied by isolated heavy rainfall and gusty winds reaching 30?40 km/h.
