Starmer’s leadership in doubt after mass Labour rebellion: Report

Several senior members of the British cabinet, including Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood and Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper, have asked Prime Minister Keir Starmer to consider the timing of his resignation after more than 80 Labour members of the parliament called for him to step down, The Times newspaper reported, citing sources.

Cabinet members are expected to tell Starmer at a meeting on Tuesday that he should step down amid concerns that his position is now “unsustainable,” the report said on Monday.

At the same time, UK media reported that three members of the UK government have resigned, demanding Starmer’s resignation.

The resignations were reportedly announced by Tom Rutland, a parliamentary private secretary (PPS) to the environment secretary, Jo Morris, PPS to the health secretary, and Cabinet Office aide Naushabah Khan.

On Thursday, regional elections took place in the United Kingdom and were held in 136 regions across England. According to the final results, Labour lost nearly 1,200 of the more than 2,200 council seats previously held by the party. The right-wing Reform UK party emerged as the clear winner, winning approximately 1,400 seats.
