UP: Six injured as supporters clash during campaigning

Six persons were injured when supporters of two candidates for the post of Nagar Palika Parishad clashed and opened fire during campaigning in Faridpur area of Bareilly district here in Uttar Pradesh, police sources said on Wednesday.


Police sources said that the incident took place late on Tuesday night in Uncha Mohalla locality where supporters of two independent candidates Shabli and Farhat Naz clashed during campaigning. “It is being alleged that one side attacked the opposite side with stick and road and opened fire injuring six persons,” they said/


Superintendent of Police (Rural) Raj Kumar Agarwal rushed to the spot after reports of clashes and firing. “A case has been lodged and raids are being conducted to arrest the accused,” he said.


Circle Officer (CO) Gaurav Singh said that a named FIR has been lodged against candidate Farhat’s husband Tajuddin, his brother Hakeemuddin and eight others. “It is being alleged that Tajuddin and his brothers opened fire with illicit firearms. While Safiq, Asif, Mohammad Shahid sustained pellet injuries, Alim, Tahir and Shahid sustained injuries after being hit with sticks and rod,” he said.


Police sources said that Tajuddin’s elder brother Hakeenuddin alias Chhote has been detained by the police.
