Winter arrives early: Srinagar goes sub-zero

The mercury in Srinagar dipped below the freezing point for the first time this season, marking the onset of winter chill in the Kashmir Valley.

According to the Meteorological Department, the summer capital recorded its first sub-zero night as temperatures dropped to -0.1 degress Celsius.

Most weather stations across the Valley also reported temperatures below freezing. The only exception was Kokernag in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district, where the minimum temperature remained slightly higher at 1.4 degrees Celsius.

The picturesque resort town of Pahalgam was the coldest location, recording a low of -3.2 degrees Celsius. In the north, Kupwara saw the temperature fall to -1.2 degrees Celsius, while Gulmarg, which experienced light snowfall last week, registered -0.2 degrees Celsius.

The MeT Department has predicted mainly dry weather across Jammu and Kashmir over the next 24 hours, with no significant change expected in conditions for the following two days.
