The Indian army has decided to initiate a probe against Major Gogoi who was arrested for allegedly checking in with a Kashmiri girl in Srinagar hotel on Wednesday. Reports said that the court of inquiry has been ordered after army chief Bipan Rawat vowed an exemplary punishment to the Major if found guilty.
“If found guilty, appropriate action would be taken against him,” Defence Ministry spokesman, Col Rajesh Kalia told IANS here.
Rawat earlier said that if any officer of the Indian army is found guilty of any offence, we will take strictest possible action.
“If Major Gogoi has done something wrong, I assure you that he will be awarded punishment at the earliest…the punishment will set an example,” he added.
Major Gogoi courted a controversy on May 23 when he was along with a local girl trying to check in at Grand Mamta hotel in Srinagar. His associate Sameer Malla argued with the hotel staff after they refused the Gogoi to check in along with the local girl.
Later the staff called the local police and arrested all the three accused. Gogoi was later released while the girl who was hailing from Budgam village was handed over to her parents.
Gogoi last year during parliamentary elections had tied Farooq Ahmad Dar to a bonnet of the jeep and paraded him to many villages. With this act he threatened the local stone pelters of same punishment in case they pelted stones on the forces.
While this act was widely appreciated in India and Gogoi was given an award by the Union defence minister, India was accused of committing gross human rights violations in Kashmir globally after the pictures of Dar surfaced on social media.
