Fresh Snowfall in higher reaches, rain lashes Kashmir plains; temperatures dip across J&K

Several higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir received fresh snowfall, while widespread rains lashed the plains during the early hours of Thursday, leading to a significant dip in temperatures across the region, officials said.

Fresh snowfall was reported from the frontier Gurez sector in north Kashmir’s Bandipora district, Zoji La along the Srinagar-Leh National Highway, and the tourist resort of Sonamarg. Several other peaks in the higher reaches of the Valley were also covered in a fresh layer of snow.

Meanwhile, the plains of Kashmir, including summer capital Srinagar, witnessed intermittent rainfall accompanied by gusty winds and thunderstorms.

Officials said heavy rainfall and thunderstorms late Wednesday night caused extensive damage to a road in Bandipora district, while water and mud entered several nearby houses, causing inconvenience to residents. The rain also triggered waterlogging and mudslides in parts of the area, disrupting normal movement.

The change in weather brought much-needed relief from the heatwave-like conditions that had prevailed across Kashmir over the past few days.

According to the Meteorological Department, there is a possibility of one or two spells of light rain and thundershowers accompanied by gusty winds and hailstorms at many places across Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday and Friday.

The department further stated that weather conditions are likely to remain generally dry during the forenoon hours, while brief spells of rain may occur during late afternoons at isolated to scattered places till May 25.(KINS)
