A day after jailed politician Abdul Rashid Sheikh aka Engineer Rashid won the Baramulla Lok Sabha seat, political parties in Kashmir demanded his release.
A two-time MLA, Rashid was arrested in 2019 under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and is lodged in Tihar jail in Delhi.
Peoples Democratic Party chief Mehbboba Mufti said that the Government of India must respect the verdict and release Engineer Rashid.
“Heartfelt congratulations to Mian Altaf, Aga Ruhullah, Engineer Rashid & Haneefa Jan for winning the parliament elections. Government of India must respect verdict of the people & release Engineer Rashid,” she said in a post on X.
CPI(M) Central Committee Member M Y Tarigami also demanded the release of Engineer.
“Engineer Rashid, who was arrested under UAPA, won the elections yesterday. My demand is that he along with those booked under the draconian law of UAPA should be released,” Tarigami said.
On Tuesday, National Conference Vice President Omar Abdullah had also demanded his release.
