Hurriyat Conference chairman and Kashmir’s chief cleric Mirwaiz Umar Farooq was again on Friday placed under house arrest and not allowed to offer congregational prayers at the Jamia Masjid, the managing body of the grand mosque said.

Anjuman Auqaf Jamia Masjid said this is the second consecutive Friday when he was not allowed to come to Jamia mosque.

” Mirwaiz movement has been completely curbed since last Friday ,while Journalists or media persons are barred from meeting him ,” the statement said.

The house detention of Mirwaiz comes days ahead of the polls in Srinagar parliamentary constituency spread over five districts. Srinagar Lok Sabha seat will go to the polls on Monday.

Anjuman said that this repeated detention of the religious head and especially keeping him away from Jamia Masjid on Fridays is very disturbing and upsets the people deeply , but in the present times has to be borne with patience.

Anjuman hoped that the hearing of the Mirwaiz’s case for complete release from house arrest slated for May 25 in the High Court will provide the relief that people are eagerly awaiting.

Hurriyat chairman Mirwaiz in September last year moved the Jammu & Kashmir High Court seeking release from continued detention.
