Nitish Kumar Takes Oath as Bihar Chief Minister

Nitish Kumar took oath as Bihar chief minister on a massive stage at Patna's Gandhi Maidan on Friday, reports said.

Lalu Yadav's son Tejaswi Yadav was the next to be sworn in, followed by his older brother Tej Pratap; both are first time lawmakers.

Tejaswi Yadav, a 26-year-old first-time lawmaker, is likely Bihar's new deputy chief minister in a nod to the stupendous performance in the Bihar elections of Lalu's RJD, the single largest party with 80 seats in the new assembly.

The guest list for the oath ceremony was a massive show of strength by parties and political leaders who oppose Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his BJP.

Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi also attended the ceremony.  His party is a member of the coalition government that Nitish Kumar will lead.

PM Modi, whose aggressive campaign in Bihar failed to enthuse voters, was invited for today's ceremony.

Modi had deputed Union Ministers Venkaiah Naidu and Rajiv Pratap Rudy to attend.

BJP ally the Shiv Sena was represented by two Maharashtra Ministers.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah and his father Farooq Abdullah of the National Conference also attended the ceremony.(Agencies)
