More than 40 people have died in Afghanistan over the past week, with over 60 others injured, as powerful floods and resulting mudslides swept across multiple provinces, the country’s National Disaster Management Authority (ANDMA) said on Wednesday.
“From March 25 to March 30, 28 people were killed in the provinces of Kabul, Kapisa, Parwan, Panjshir, Bamyan, Daykundi, Paktia, Paktika, Logar, and Zabol, and 49 others were injured in the provinces of Kandahar, Helmand, Herat, Ghor, Balkh, Badghis, Samangan, Sari-Pul, Baghlan, Takhar, Jawzjan, Faryab, Badakhshan, Nangarhar and Laghman. And on March 31, at least 14 people were killed and 17 others were injured in incidents related to rainfall and floods,” ANDMA spokesman Mohammad Youssef Hammad said.
On March 31 alone, 476 homes were destroyed or damaged, nearly 500 acres of fertile agricultural land were washed away, and 16 shops, 23 water wells and several water supply networks were destroyed, the spokesman added.
