Scotland produced a powerful batting display and followed it up with disciplined bowling to secure a convincing 73-run victory over Italy in their ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 Group C match at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Monday.
After being put in to bat, Scotland made their decision clear. They built their innings steadily before finishing with real force to reach a commanding 207 for 4 in their 20 overs. George Munsey led the charge with a well-constructed 84 off 54 balls. He found the boundary regularly and gave Scotland early momentum. Michael Jones supported him with 37, and the pair added 126 runs for the opening wicket. Their contribution lays a strong foundation for the team.
For much of the innings, Scotland looked set for a total between 180 and 190. However, the final overs changed the overall picture. Brandon McMullen smashed an unbeaten 41 with just 18 balls. The result boosted the scoring rate at the best possible time.
Michael Leask then provided a stunning late burst, scoring 22 not out from the only five deliveries he faced. Scotland added heavy runs in the last five overs, which pushed their total past the 200 mark.
Italy’s innings started in the worst possible way, as they lost a wicket on the very first ball. Despite that setback, JJ Smuts played aggressively, and the partnership between Harry Malenti and Ben Manenti gave Italy brief hope. The pair added valuable runs and kept the scoreboard moving. Ben Manenti top-scored with 52 from 31 balls, of which Harry’s contribution was 37.
At one stage, Italy had crossed 110 with wickets in hand and was still mathematically in the game.
Scotland’s bowlers tightened their grip, with Michael Leask producing a match-winning spell of 4 for 17.
Italy collapsed from a promising position and was bowled out for 134 in just 16.4 overs.
